Prince Jasper Riles, a cherished red toy poodle, was born on April 19, 2011, in New Orleans, Louisiana. At just ten weeks old, he found his forever home with the Riles family as a gift to then 15-year-old Gabrielle “Gabby” Riles from her parents, Shong and the late Grear Long-Riles. As a “poodle” family, the Riles household welcomed Jasper with open arms and hearts.
As a puppy, Jasper’s days were filled with joy and adventure. He adored being rewarded with Canine Carry Out Beef Flavored Treats for his good behavior, mischievously running through the neighbor’s yard, and turning toilet paper rolls into makeshift toys. One of his most memorable acts was playfully hiding Grear’s wedding ring in a sofa for over a week.
When Gabby left for college, Jasper stayed with her mother, Grear, and their bond only deepened. They spent their days with Jasper perfecting his version of hide-and-seek, often making Grear search the whole neighborhood to find him. They enjoyed Popeyes at Gabby’s grandfather’s house, where Jasper also charmed his way into the hearts of the family’s other dogs. As Grear’s health declined due to Stage 4 cancer, close family friends Lettie and Steven Rilleaux lovingly stepped in to care for Jasper, ensuring he received the same affection and attention while Gabby continued her studies.
Following Grear’s passing in May 2016, Gabby and Jasper were reunited, and from that point forward, he remained by her side. Jasper became a well-traveled companion, moving with Gabby as she pursued her undergraduate studies in Nashville, TN, her graduate education in Syracuse, NY, and finally settling in Lafayette, LA, where Gabby began her career.
Over the span of 13 years, Gabby and Jasper shared an unbreakable bond. Jasper was more than just a pet—he was her “roll dog,” always by her side, sharing every moment. He was known and loved by all who knew Gabby, accompanying her wherever life took her, and even sharing in her meals. Their connection spanned from his playful puppy years to his gentle senior days.
Jasper will be deeply missed by Gabby and all who knew him. He was not just a dog, but the best companion and friend she could have asked for. Gabby’s only hope is that Jasper now runs free, sees clearly again, and is warmly greeted by her mother, Grear, at heaven’s gates.

Being attached to our furry family makes it so difficult
