Loki made every single day better. He was my joy, my peace, and the best little friend. He made me laugh every day.
Loki was found in Sabine Parish around 8 weeks old. A scrawny, sickly little kitten. Acadiana Animal Aid rescued him from Sabine’s high kill shelter on his euthanasia day. He was nursed back to health for over a month by a foster before he was well enough to be adopted.
Meanwhile, I had been visiting AAA every week for months. They had hundreds of lovely cats but not mine. I was looking for my best friend. A kitty that would love me as much as I loved him. A snuggly lap friend.
On July 21, 2012 I finally found my best buddy. He was everything I ever wanted. My little shadow. On the day I met him, the adoption coordinator opened his cage and he walked straight over to me, crawled into my lap, and fell asleep. I was in love and he was home.
Every single day together was magic. He followed me everywhere. He curled into my lap as soon as I sat down. We played together for hours.
When Loki was 3, we moved cross country. We met my husband and all moved in together. Loki couldn’t be happier and neither could the humans. He had two human servants now. He spent long days asking the humans to play with him, make laps, give cuddles, dispense treats, take him outside, or build fires for him to sit beside.
Loki never liked to be alone, so we started taking him on all adventures with us. At the time we were living in Seattle on a lake. He could see us in the boat from our balcony. He’d cry from the balcony. After all the neighbors commented about our silly kitty complaining from the balcony about being left behind, we tried taking him. He was uncertain at first but really started to love it. After a few days on the lake, when we’d go to open the door he’d run to the carrier and start purring. We spent most afternoons on the water. Loki happily napped in his carrier when he wasn’t exploring the boat or watching the birds. Some of our most memorable days were on the lake with our favorite kitty.
There were mountain trips, cross country plane trips, beaches, car rides, and endless adventures full of cuddles, love, fish, laps, and playtime. Wherever we were, Loki was happy to go.
Loki loved to chase lizards. He loved it even more if I’d followed him around the yard to “help” him find the lizards.
He loved tuna and salmon, but more than that he loved a variety of food. Something new was always the most exciting and enticing. He quickly learned to sit in a chair like people at the dinner table if he wanted people food. So he’d quietly sit at the dinner table and wait for a piece of fish.
He loved a warm lap. We spent so many hours a day cuddled up.
He loved a good fire-be it a fire place, propane, or wood fire. He’d often sit next to the fireplace or fire pit and meow until we lit a fire just for him. We’d try to argue that it was August but he always won. Who could argue with that adorable face?
He loved to “dance” on his favorite stuffed animal. He had it his whole life and carried it all over the house just to “dance” (make biscuits) on it. He loved tag and he loved his fishing pole. He loved any game that I’d play with him. He rarely ever just played by himself. He loved to sit on top of my head and chew my hair. He loved to sleep in a nest of my hair. He was so very smart and loved puzzle feeder games. He was a food motivated kitty who was always happy to play to earn a treat. He knew as many tricks as most dogs (sit, stay, come, fetch). He followed me everywhere and was always happy to “help” with anything I was doing (he’d swipe puzzle pieces or game pieces as I played or grab laundry as I folded it).
But, those that knew Loki well knew he also struggled so much. His poor little body was always so much more fragile than his spirit. He had kidney disease for 9 years along with a dozen other diagnoses. Many of which he acquired as just a young kitty. If love could have saved him he surely would have lived forever.
I hope we made his life as full of love as he made ours. He will be forever missed.
Thank you to all the veterinary professionals who made his journey as long, happy, and painless as it was. But special thanks to Dr Maggie and Jordan at Placer Vet for helping Loki transition with such empathy and care. And of course a huge Thank you to Dr Jasmine and her team at the Cat Clinic for keeping our sweetest boy with us for the last 4 years. Without their tireless dedication to Loki’s care, I know we would have lost him years ago. And, thank you to Pet Passages for creating such a beautiful memorial of his memory.
